PERSONALITY: Napstablook is a sad little ghost. They’re essentially the Eeyore of the cast, being introverted, gloomy, and with low self-esteem. If proof of that claim is needed, just let it be known that one of their hobbies involves lying on the floor and ‘feel[ing] like garbage’ after eating. However, there is more to them than that: they know what they like to do and have the conviction to stick to it. They also have a caring side that they show when they’ve plucked up enough courage.
Still, their introversion is a massively defining feature. Napstablook has such low self-esteem that even after saving the human from an endless battle, they apologise for breaking up the fight. They’re unable to see that the human was in danger, and instead thought that they were with a friend. This shows that they don’t have a very good grasp on social cues. Despite that they do invite the human to spend time at their house. Their wording is just as glum as ever – ‘in case you want to come… or in case you don’t’ – but once the human is there, they are quite a polite host, though they do trip over themselves to apologise for any potential shortcomings.
Making friends is hard for them to do. Undyne, their direct neighbour, was and is eager to make friends with and protect them. However they were daunted by her personality, which made her back off. Nevertheless they mention her if she dies, and seem regretful that they didn’t get to know her better. This implies that they’d like to reach out and be friends, but are just too intimidated to do so. Furthermore, upon first meeting the human, Napstablook was so shy that they pretended to be asleep so that they didn’t have to deal with them. The entire battle with them (on a Pacifist route) involves cheering them up until they gain the confidence to show this ‘nice person’ their special skill – making a hat out of their tears. Normally, this prompts the end of the fight, however a negative response can shatter Napstablook's fragile self-esteem more, and they'll say ‘I knew it’ while crying uncontrollably. If the human does compliment them on the hat, they’ll be really touched that they met someone nice – ‘i usually come to the RUINS because there's nobody around... but today i met somebody nice…’ – and leave them be, only to rescue them from the Mad Dummy later and invite them to their house. They make a real effort to strengthen the small bond that was begun in their fight.
That is noteworthy because, as well as making friends, keeping friends also seems difficult for them. On a small level, they send the human an invite to be friends on UnderNet, but reject their own invite before the human has a chance to do either. In a bigger one, they were purportedly quite close with Shyren, a singer who lived in Waterfall near them. However, once their cousin (spoilers: Mettaton) left the farm, they seemed unable to keep up the friendship – Shyren seemed to need a lot of support after the ‘death’ of her sister, and Napstablook was unable to give it on their own. In fact, it’s heavily suggested that Napstablook relied on Mettaton’s outgoing and excitable nature to come out of their shell, and that hasn’t changed even when he became his glamourous robot self. Napstablook’s TV is old, but their channel-changing buttons are almost untouched, implying that they don’t change the channel from Mettaton’s shows. They comment on it - ‘there’s a show i like to watch… sometimes…’ - if the human examines the TV. It doesn’t sound too committed, but for Napstablook, who’s shy and has little self-esteem, even admitting that much is a big testament to their enjoyment.
Gloom isn’t all there is to Napstablook though. They are a businessperson. If the human decides to play THUNDERSNAIL – a racing game on Napstablook’s farm – then Napstablook will charge them 10G to play, and only give out 9G if the human wins. They do apologise for it, but say that they have to make a profit somehow. Our sweet little ghost is a SNEAKY ghost... but only in this circumstance.
One of their other hobbies is listening to, making, and remixing music. When you go to their house, there are several CDs of theirs that you can listen to. Napstablook will have a unique line of dialogue about each one, and speaks in a more relaxed, even slightly confident tone when talking about them. Contrast ‘i’d just weigh you down’ with ‘ah, a classic spooktune’ or ‘once you know the lyrics, it’s hard not to sing along’. They’re very talented at this – one of their songs was ‘spooky’ enough to scare a creep of a monster into promising to behave better! Furthermore when Mettaton returns, he offers Napstablook the role of sound mixer. It’s true that Mettaton may feel he has a lot to make up for, but he also only wants the best for his brand so it’s a testament to Napstablook’s skill.
As well as music, there’s the snails to consider. Napstablook is the only remaining member of Blook Family Acres – a snail farm in Waterfall. Despite only having one dedicated customer anymore, however, Napstablook still keeps the farm running and cares for the snails. In fact, they worry a lot about the snails' health and wellbeing, to the point where they’ll give 30G to the human if the snail they back in THUNDERSNAIL loses by a hair, because they don’t want to crush her pride by not giving the human prize money. They also comment on the human cheering the snail so much that she gets crushed by the pressure, and seem concerned for her.

It’s debatable if Napstablook knew that Mettaton was their cousin who left, but either way, they leave him a very touching, very emotional message on his last show. Please keep in mind that Napstablook is an introvert who fakes sleep and phases out of buildings to get away from situations that overpower them, then see that they call in to a show watch by at least 10,000 people to give their idol a message. They talk a lot, for Napstablook, saying, ‘..... oh........ hi... mettaton... i really liked watching your show... my life is pretty boring, but... seeing you on the screen... brought excitement to my life... vicariously. i can't tell, but... i guess this is the last episode...? i'll miss you... mettaton.....’. It’s notable because they call to cheer for their idol in front of thousands, and also talked a little about themself. Granted, the latter is in a mostly depreciating manner, but they still did it in front of 10,000 people. Their desire to show their support of Mettaton trumped their shyness, so they do have it in them to speak up for what they like. It still shows them as shy and introverted, of course.

They literally peaced the apocalypse. Sometimes, you just need time to yourself, you know?

They’re also able to phase through solid objects, vanish entirely from a locale, and entirely ignore an apocalypse. It’s also outright stated that Napstablook can’t be harmed by physical attacks, and only lowers their HP to be polite during a battle. Judging by other ghost characters, Napstablook would be able to possess a physical form and bond to it which would open them to physical attacks… they just don’t really want to do it.
